Some time ago I recounted the story of how my new wife and I spent a week of our honeymoon in 1973 in a tiny cabin on Macquarie Pass. There were a number of bunks but no double bed, which was a bit of a comedown for a couple on their honeymoon. There was also no heater (it was middle of May), no hot water and no electricity. Having said that, we were young, in love and somehow we overcame all the difficulties.
The photo above is one that my wife found while sorting through a multitude of boxes of old photos in the last few days. You can see by the mode of dress that we were feeling the cold but we still managed to explore the area known then as Clover Hill.
This is the original photo and it shows our Mazda 1500 sedan (the wheel has turned the full circle and I own another Mazda now, the MX5)
I will provide a link to the original Ben Turner article but here are 2 more photos from that week that Helena has just discovered.
You can see that the cabin was a bit more substantial than what my memory recalls and I can tell you that the chimney was for an open fire which we used extensively during the week we were there. This cabin was one of a number that Ben rented out to holiday-makers during those years. A recent exploration of the site reveals that all traces of the holiday lets have completely disappeared which, of course, makes these photos quite a bit more valuable from an historical point of view.
My original article includes a number of photos from the period of the A Frame house in which Ben and his wife lived and they show how much the site has degraded to the point where very little of the structure remains. However, here is a picture of the house from May 1973 and, pleasingly, it shows Ben’s VW Karmann Ghia.
I would love it if any of my readers can add any memories or photos from the Clover Hill site.
Here’s the link to the original article.
Till next time.
