Many of you will recall the excellent documentaries on pay TV hosted by MCN’s Warren Pole, the so-called “Ultimate Biker Challenge”. In each episode Pole attempts to master some motorcycling discipline that he has not tried before, be it speedway, observed trials, motorcycle soccer, grass tracking, etc. I’m really impressed that Pole, who has a fairly high profile, especially in Britain (he hosts and commentates Channel 4’s WSBK telecasts) puts himself out there in a very public way in these Discovery Channel docos.
In the last series, Pole spent the day at Imola, learning the track and attempting to do a lap time that was as close as possible to that set by former 500cc World Champion, Marco Luchinelli (who lives near the track and probably practises there every day !)
In the end, Pole’s best lap times was just 7 seconds slower than Luchinelli’s but was significantly faster than anyone else who was on track that day. Like I said, he’s a pretty impressive rider for a journalist. But many people watching the show might ave wondered just who Marco Luchinelli is. Well, this profile from the always-interesting VisorDown web site, answers the question as well as a few others that you might have been afraid to ask. I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading about how the GP stars of years gone by spent their leisure time.
