This interview with Troy on superbikeplanet this morning seems pretty conclusive.
“”I quit too early,” Bayliss said last night. “I’m pissed off because I stopped one championship short of Fogarty and I’m seven wins down on him.” π
Here’s the Wikipedia potted biography.
I well remember that Phillip Island performance. Bayliss was still relatively unknown, even in Australian racing at that stage, but the overseas commentators were wetting themselves as Troy muscled the desparately underpowered Molenar Suzuki 250 around PI, putting it into a podium position in T12 only to be stomped by the more powerful bikes on the run to the flag.
Nori, you’d better perform at Kyalami!
UPDATE: Superbikeplanet is conducting a poll to see what their readers think of this. So far, 1620 people have voted and 76% of them believe that Bayliss would be on the pace and would win races.

Bayliss back in Superbike…now that would be fantastic!
I like his win or crash style, a true racer in my eyes.
Now if they could lure Spies back as well [very unlikely] him & Troy would be
banging fairing every race.
Ducati need a guy like Troy back now that Haga is not doing so well.
Phil Hall says
Oh yes, definitely. Ducati are really in a deep, deep hole at the moment. Fabrizio is 6th in the championship and Haga, the nominal team, leader, is in 11th. Sure they are missing Tardozzi, but there’s more to it than that, I’m sure. Fabrizio is the typical Italian “when you’re hot, you’re hot and when you’re not, you’re not” rider and Haga is just psychologically destroyed after losing the unloseable championship last year. They need help, like desparately.
