“TFRPS” stands for “The Famous Robertson Pie Shop.” Also known as just “The Pie Shop”, most Sydney basin riders will know of it and have probably even visited it. While there are other pie shops around (Kangaroo Valley, Milton, etc) there is really only one Pie Shop.
Situated at the top of the famous Macquarie Pass, the shop has been an iconic business for as long as I can remember (and I started driving the Pass in 1968). In its early days the shop was run by a maverick Dutchman who tried to have his property that included the shop, declared a Principality and therefore exempt from council rates and planning laws. For many years I can remember the front windows being plastered with all manner of hand-written, and later, typed diatribes against the council and its by-laws and regulations and exhortations to all passers-by to support the owner in his on-going fight with the bureaucrats.
The battle has long since ceased but the sign outside still says, “The Principality of Laird’s Corner” as a memento of the days gone by when the owner tried to secede from the local authority.
These days the shop sells pies (d’uh) and all sorts of delicacies to a constant stream of tourists and locals who can be found there whenever the shop is open. And, of course, due to its strategic location at the head of Macquarie Pass, one of southern NSW’s premier riding roads, the car park can nearly always be found to be crammed with bikes of all sorts, from modern sports bikes to ancient classics out on a club run and everything in between.
I live just 35 kms from TFRPS and I confess to spending many happy hours there. The proprietors are lovely people, avid motorcyclists and keen supporters of local riders. And almost every time you go there you can see something worth looking at.
See what I mean? And this is only a sample. If you’re in the area, don’t miss the chance to vist. If you ARE in the area, give me a call and I’ll join you for a coffee and a pie.
