I don’t know if you’ve noticed it or not, but the price of bananas seems to have gone through the roof in the last month or so. Being an avid banana eater, this is somewhat annoying. First they went up to $3.49 a kilo, then $3.99, then $4:39, and, finally, to $4.99 a kilo.
I asked the girl at the local fruit market if she knew any reason why they had suddenly spiked and she said that they hadn’t been told anything. No cyclones, floods, windstorms etc seem to have affected the growing areas so she couldn’t help either.
So, we have been a banana-less house for a few weeks and I’ve been getting pretty tetchy about it. In fact, I was finding the whole thing quite unappealing.
Until I went to Woolies yesterday morning and found, to my delight, that the price had dropped to $2.49 for a kilo.
I bought 2 kilos.
Life as we know it, has returned to normality.

It’s not just bananas either, stone fruits have been expensive too.At my local plumbs, peaches, nectarines & apricots are all 5.99 + per kg for really small fruit.
Remember the days when these stone fruits were a decent size & full of flavor & cheap.
Nectarines are my favorite but the rock hard fruit you get these days takes a week to ripen & still with little taste.
I seen on a current affair program that a lot of fruit/veg that supermarkets sell are mostly old stock from cold storage.
Best to get fruit from those road side stalls in country areas,at least it will be fresh.
