Recently I talked about the silly season and how silly it really is. Well, here’s an update on what we know will be happening next season and which places are still yet to be filled.

Rider | Team | Contract |
Alex Rins | Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP |
Yamaha contract, end of 2024
|
Aleix Espargaro | Aprilia Racing | Retiring at end of 2024 |
Joan Mir | Repsol Honda Team |

|
Raul Fernandez | Trackhouse Racing |
Aprilia contract, end of 2024
|
Augusto Fernandez | Red Bull Tech3 GASGAS | Unplaced for 2025, probably Yamaha test rider |
Takaaki Nakagami | LCR Honda Idemitsu | Place likley to be taken by Somkiat Chantra |
Now what is really interesting here is the number of riders who come off-contract at the end of this year compared to the number of seats that are available. The only rider we know who is DEFINITELY not going to be there is Aleix Espargaro but there are several others who places are looking increasingly parlous.
I expect to see Augusto Fernandez bowing out at the end of the season as well as Jack Miller. Ducati are going to find room for Aldegeur in 2025, at Gresini racing. BTW, since that list was compiled, Joan Mir has been confirmed as staying with Repsol Honda.
Then there is PRAMAC. I don’t think switching the bikes to Yamaha is going to do the trick, in fact, I think that might be a step backwards in the short term at least.
What is really stupid (as distinct from silly) about this whole discussion, is that we are barely halfway through the 2024 season and plans are being made for 2025 and beyond. Allowing for how much can change with riders, bikes, teams, sponsorships and a million other variables, it seems ridiculous to be making such firm plans this far out.
As always, watch this space.
On the other categories, Jacob Roulstone has re-signed with Gas Gas for 2025, Senna Agius will continue at Intact and Jake Kelso will shift from CFMoto to Angelus MTA. All solid moves for the three very talented Aussies.
Austria this weekend, let’s see how it goes.
I haven’t been riding much as various skin cancer ops have curtailed my activities somewhat, hopefully they will be done soon. Did get a nice Sunday ride in last Sunday, though.
