…or so they say. Well, in fact it IS a small world, a fact that was proven to me again this morning. Friday breakfast at the City Cafe in Wollongong is becoming a bit of a tradition with us and Helena knows Henry, the owner, and his wife even better than I do. The walls of the cafe are covered with artwork by local artists including several water colours that Helena has displayed there in the hope of selling them.
This morning our other two “regulars” were gallivanting in the central west of NSW so brekkie was just my old army mate, Thommo, and me. While we were waiting for our pancakes to arrive we engaged in a lively conversation with Henry as he made coffee for various customers. Somehow the subject of Latin came up and he remarked that he had studied Latin (as you did back then) in high school. I replied that I had done so also, having studied for the first 4 years and topping my class in the first School Certificate exam in 1965.
“Yes, well,” Henry went on, “Our school was the only high school in NSW that actually had a Latin verse in the school song.” “That’s funny,” I replied,”So did mine.” “Booragul High School,” Henry answered and you probably know the rest.
Yes, both Henry and I had attended the same high school. He had gone there when the school opened in 1958, almost 60 years ago, and his last year at BHS, 1962, was my first year there. Not surprisingly we both then engaged in a lively conversation around school memories, students and teachers.
It IS a small world. In November this year I am attending a reunion of the Class of 62 to celebrate 50 years since we completed the first Higher School Certificate in 1967. I told Henry about the BHS Facebook group, about which he didn’t know so I hope he gets as much fun and enjoyment poring over the old school photos as I do.
