….as my dad used to say, is the most important meal of the day, because, if you’re not home by then, your wife starts to get suspicious.
On the last weekend of each month our riding group has a Brekkie Ride, as I have mentioned before. Today the venue was the aptly named Cambewarra Lookout Cafe. Perched on the top of the mountain overlooking vast tracts of the Shoalhaven, the cafe is always popular no matter what the season. This morning it was packed, rather surprising given the Arctic chill that pervaded outside.
We left Yallah at around 8 and I was pleased that I wore my winter gear because it sure was cold. I was looking forward to feeling how my newly-fitted heated hand grips would go and I was very glad I had them. Down on the flat, the temperature was 12 degrees (that’s Celsius) but it plummeted quickly as we climbed the mountain towards Robertson and, along Pearsons Lane before you drop down into Kangaroo Valley, it had dropped to 6 degrees. The “toasties” were working, thank goodness. It stayed around that as we dropped into the valley and climbed the other side and it was still just 8 degrees when we reached our destination. Our hosts had the log fire going and it was supplemented by the aircon which I a sure was set to “incinerate”
As noted, the view from the back verandah is spectacular..
but I didn’t stay out there too long to appreciate it. The obligatory group bike photo was also dispatched quickly and I hustled back inside.
The service was friendly, fast and the food was excellent. Likewise the coffee which was presented with more care than what is experienced at most eateries. (see above). Some other friends joined us but, eschewing the cold, they arrived in the car!
The usual line-shooting and bench racing took place and, breakfast and chat concluded, the group split up to go their separate ways. Having found that my toasties worked and being reluctant to brave the cold for too much longer regardless, I opted to continue east to Bomaderry where I planned to cross the highway and return home via Seven Mile Beach and Gerringong. Unsurprisingly this was a popular choice with others as well. Once out near the coast the weather picked up with my temp gauge showing 19 degrees for most of the run home.
As a means of ensuring that the bike was up to snuff for my trip this week, it was a success. I am happy that my new winter jacket and pants will be more than adequate for the trip and that my hands won’t get too cold if I happen to encounter some cold weather.
As a social exercise it was, as always, a success as well. Time spent with motorcycling friends is pretty much the best of time and I look forward with considerable anticipation to the next monthly brekkie ride. Let me see, where will we go for July?
