The speedway season is almost upon us which means that it’s time for me to put on another hat. As commentator at Nowra Speedway, my local track, and sometime guest commentator at Goulburn and the ACT, Summer gives me the opportunity to indulge in another, very different passion.
Last weekend there was a working bee at Nowra which gave committee members and volunteers an opportunity to “spruce up” the venue before racing starts. Like most sporting venues run by volunteers, the place was looking a little “sad” and it was pleasing to see the number of keen people who turned up and the results of their hard work at the end of the day.
Also like most volunteer organisations, the work always has to be done by someone, and the “someone” is usually “anybody except me”. Sadly, one of the things that has been somewhat neglected is the speedway’s web site so it was a real pleasure to be given admin rights and free rein to drag it, kicking and screaming, into the present era. It’s been a lot of work as so much of it was either out of date or incomplete and learning how to use another piece of software to do the job was quite a challenge.
But, it is done and we are now ready to greet the new season which kicks off on the last weekend of October with a Practice Night and on the 14th of November with the first meeting proper.
On another subject, the internet is abuzz this morning after the traditional Thursday Press Conference for the MotoGp meeting at Sepang this weekend. Valentino Rossi has shown a side to his nature previously unseen, berating Marc Marquez for “helping” Jorge Lorenzo to stop him (Rossi) from winning the championship. Memo, Mr Rossi. Marquez won the race and robbed Lorenzo of 5 valuable points, or can’t you do maths? If it wasn’t so petulant and childish, it could almost be funny.
A busy weekend coming up. An early morning doing “The Lap” (weather permitting,) then guest commentating at Goulburn Speedway tomorrow night. Sunday morning the traditional end of month “Brekkie Ride” to Shoalhaven Heads then back to Kiama to take in the EJ/EH Holden Club’s car and bike show at Black Beach. It’s going to be a tough gig, but I reckon I just might do it.
