Nasty F1 accident.
Whew! I’ve just spent most of today doing a major upgrade to this site. When we changed over the theme and introduced the newer, brighter, look, we suspected straight away that we were on a winner. What I didn’t account for was that the upgrade would require a complete re-jig of the menu system and the items contained therein. Getting that right has been a huge drama for a non-technical person like me, but, thanks to an enormous amount of help from Chris Mundy (my backroom guru) I have now been able to make it work. So now, when you look at the menus there are actually things there to read, whoohoo!
But wait, there’s more. As well as transferring over all the pages that I had previously created to the new menu structure, I have also converted nearly 100 posts (day-to-day comments like this one) to pages so that they can be included in the menus and be read more easily. For those of you who I have lost, let me explain. WordPress, the software package that I use to compose this blog, recognises two separate types of entries. The first are Posts, like this one. They are usually topical and are being constantly moved down the page and eventually off it as new posts are added. They don’t get deleted, they just get buried. This is usually not a problem as the content is topical and it “ages.” The best analogy is the news pages in your local newspaper.
But WordPress also uses Pages. These are articles that can be accessed from the menu structure and are always visible and accessible. Again, to use the newspaper anaolgy, WordPress’s Pages are more like feature articles that are meant to be more permanent and convenient to access.
Unfortunately, many of the things that I have written as Posts over the last nearly 5 years (yes, really) have been of a more permanent nature rather than being “newsy” and because they HAVE been Posts, they are now deeply buried amongst the 1100 or so Posts that I have published in that time.
Enter PtoP, a nifty little plug in for WordPress that enables the user to convert Posts into Pages. This unburies Posts that the writer wants to have always available and lifts them into the menu structure (albeit by a long and torturous process). This is what I have been doing today (as well as the usual chores and having lunch with my wonderful wife in town into the bargain). So, now if you look at the menus at the top of the page you will find that they are chock-a-block with articles that most lifers haven’t seen for a while, if ever.
I do hope you enjoy searching through and reading the content. As you can imagine, it has taken a long time to put it all together. Unlike some blog sites, all my work is original and previously unpublished. I do not search through existing material and republish it as my own and, if I do refer to others’ material, I am always careful to acknowledge the source, with a link if possible.
It has been some time since I updated the My Motobiography section of the site, for reasons that I have detailed above. I note, with some chagrin, that I have remained stuck in 1983 for an unconscionable length of time. I intend to get started on bringing my story up to date as soon as I can so please stay tuned for what has happened to me in the last 27 years!
Thank you again for your patience, your positive and encouraging feedback and your loyalty.
