Today actually is my 40th wedding anniversary (as well as being Mothers Day). On the 12th of May 1973, my fiancee walked down the aisle towards me at Port Kembla Baptist Church. When she arrived at the front of the church I turned to her and said, “New dress?” Somehow the levity seemed entirely fitting. A little while later, the minister pronounced us man and wife. Helena had just turned 20 and I was 24 and so the roller coaster that is called marriage had begun.
I know it seems that I have been banging on about the anniversary for a while now and the reason is that I actually have. Taking advantage of the school holidays to go to Norfolk Island (our originally intended honeymoon destination) meant that we sort of started celebrating early. Then again, given that not many couples even make it to this milestone, I guess we can be cut a little slack.
It’s been a wonderful 40 years, filled with all of the highs and lows that life can throw at you. But through it all, we have stayed cheerful and optimistic, always looking for the best in life and in those with whom we have shared the journey. We’ve been to lots of weddings, too many funerals and the laughter has been sprinkled with tears. Now, as we approach middle age (60 is the new 40) we are looking forward to enjoying our family and our gorgeous grandchildren. Not many couples get to enjoy what we have and we are very grateful.
I want to take the opportunity of thanking all you lifers for the good wishes you have sent my way over the last month. It has been greatly appreciated. Now, let’s go celebrate.
