..while the sun shines.
Seriously, I’ve seen a bit of country that I’ve never seen before today. Previously the furthest distance past Wagga that I have been is Narrandera, but I’ve managed to go a little further this time. Stayed overnight in Hay last night, a great little town and tonight I’m in Waikire (that’s in South Australia, just past Renmark).
The long straights in between Hay and Balranald are very deceptive especially when you’re trying to overtake. It’s so hard to judge whether you should go or stay since it’s so hard to tell how far away the opposing traffic is. I’m guessing that people who travel the way all the time get used to it and compensate, but I reckon I’d take a while. Of course, the long straights are also as interesting as watching paint dry, but they do allow you to tick along at 110 for hours at a time, and, when you’re trying to make time, this can help.
I’m amazed at how wet it is out here. They must have had a heap of rain as the dams are all full and the paddocks are awash with still water.
At Mildura the Murray River is at the top of its banks and many of the small wharfs that houseboats and etc regularly use are under water. Quite a sight!
Tonorrow the Barossa Valley and then on to Adelaide. The last time I saw the city was March 1959 (yes, 51 years ago) and I am looking forward to it.
Unfortunately, I still haven’t figured out how to download photos from my new phone (Samsung Galaxy S, what a device!) so I’ll have to wait till I get home to upload them. I’ll let you know more tomorrow.
