What a day yesterday was. I had to meet the better half at a friend’s place on Canberra on Sunday night so it was a great chance to do some exploring. I’d been told that the Nowra-Nerriga road was almost complketely sealed so I thought I’d check it out as a possible alternative to the Hume when visiting Canberra. So, 20kms south of Nowra, I hit the Turpentine road and headed west. The road was great until about 6kms in when it turned to gravel, albeit very good quality gravel, recently re-sheeted, I’d reckon.
There was only about 10kms of it and then I hit an unexpected “T” intersection. The left turn pointed to Nerriga and the right pointed to Nowra…what the hell? There’s another road to Nerriga from Nowra? I pressed on until I found the Tianjara Falls turnoff. As I had time, I cruised in and had a look. A couple in a car informed me that the falls were worth seeing and the the road to Nowra came out on BTU Road in Nowra behind HMAS Albatross. Well, there you go. I’d done the Turpentine for nothing.
The falls were lovely, and I’ll upload the pics when I get back. So, the Nerriga Road. IT IS SENSATIONAL!!! Sealed all the way to the town with brand spankers bitumen. And the corners that were diabolical when the road was appalling gravel are now magnificent. +100 for the new road, it’s amazing.
Stopped at the pub to be told that the road through to Braidwood is still to be avoided, so I turned right just out of town and negotiated some excellent and some dreadful roads through Mayfield to come out in the middle of Tarago. Yeah, I know, but sometimes you need to just follow your nose.
By the time I got to Chris’s place in Canberra, I’d done about 400kms, a fair bit of it on unfamiliar roads. Great fun.
That’s all for today, will update again tomorrow.
