We had a mini-Snowy tour planned for this weekend, accommodation booked and all. Then, this afternoon, I get this email..
“The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that current models are showing the potential for heavy rainfall associated with the low pressure system affecting NSW from Friday 12th Feb to Mon 15th Feb. A rain band may travel from the north west of the state, and extend to the Southern Highlands with potential of 100mm to 200mm of rain over the 4 day period.
The BoM also advises the rainfall in N/W region may cause riverine flooding, possibly on the Castlereagh, Bogan and Macquarie Rivers as well as the Lower Namoi catchments. Catchments have potential for flash flooding given predicted rainfall.
There are also indcations of associated thunderstorms with the capacity for flash flooding. This may impact the ACT and surrounding areas including Cootamundra & Cooma. Sunday 14th February is identified as having greatest potential for heavy rain and thunderstorms. It is likely that a flash flood warning will be issued by Bureau on Fri 12th February. In 1970, Coomamundra received 70mm of heavy rainfall that caused flash flooding. Some of the likely impacted areas have already received 45 mm of rain over the past 48hrs (also received 50mm at Xmas) so the ground is already wet. Similarly, Cooma has already received 70mm in the past past 48 hours. ”
This is from the local SES. Not looking good.
