Nothing like “vegging” in front of the telly when the AGP is on. Unlike normal meetings when it requires being up in the middle of the night to catch the action, the Australian MotoGp meeting takes place in Prime Time, so to speak, and provides couch potatoes like me the opportunity of wasting the whole afternoon pontificating about the races.
I was rooting for Julian Simon in the 125’s this season; don’t know why, I just like his style. So I’m tickled that he clinched the title with 2 races to spare. I LOVED his tiger helmet, too, what a great way to celebrate a win.
Disappointed, of course, for Ayoama on the Scot Honda. For obvious reasons I’d love to see him win the title in the 250’s after years of Aprilia domination, but it sure wasn’t to be his day today and fate played him a pretty poor had with the Locatelli accident relegating him from a reasonable 4th place to a disappointing 7th place at the show of the red flag. With ony a 12 point lead and Simoncelli on a roll, it will be pretty hard for the likeable Japanese rider to hold on and win Honda’s first 250 crown in a long, long, time.
The MotoGp race was a cracker, despite the lack of overtaking. Watching the two best riders in the world today balancing those vicious beasts of bikes on a knife edge for 27 laps around the gruelling PI layout is a treat and it was great to see Casey win and to see Rossi’s generous applause of his efforts on the clow0down lap. Had Stoner been in a position to threaten Rossi’s almost certain march towards his 8th World Championship, perhaps he would not have been quite as fulsome, but it was good to see. Honda continues to disappoint, though; from being the company that WANTED 800’s to being a company that can’t win a race with them, must be galling.
All in all, a great afternoon’s entertainment.
