This photo has been doing the rounds on social media for a few days now. It is featured on Marc Marquez’s official site so I have no doubt that it is genuine.
It shows, in graphic detail, the scarring that four lots of surgery on his right arm has left. Somebody said that this is an old picture that has been published before and that skin grafts since the last lot of surgery (July 2022?) has improved the look of his arm. If that is so (and, as a devout MM93 fan, I have never seen the photo before which seems pretty odd) one can only hope that his arm WILL look better in time.
In an event, the photo certainly shows the price that road racers (and all motorcycle sports competitors) pay in the pursuit of their passion. They say that chicks dig scars. I don’t know how true that is and I have more than a fair few of my own from my big accident, but I do know that they are always there and are a constant reminder of the pain and the after-effects of a big accident.
It’s to be hoped that these scars will fade with time and further treatment but it is also to be hoped that they will be a reminder to Marc of the huge cost that he has already paid in pursuit of his passion and a warning that his body won’t be able to take too much more of this.
Having said that, Aussie champ, Mick Doohan, not only survived a much worse accident than this, and terrible scarring as well but went on to win 5 world championships thus highlighting how indomitable the human spirit is.
Happy Australia Day to you all.
