The other day when I was riding my short stint on the Pacific Highway, I became aware of a strange sensation on the top of my head. It felt like there was water dripping onto it from the air vent. But it wasn’t raining and I hadn’t washed my visor/helmet at the last fuel stop. What could it be? As I rode on, a little perplexed, I noticed that the “water” was moving, seemingly dripping down the side of my head.
I had to stop to see what was going on. As I removed the helmet and looked inside I saw a bee wandering around inside. He seemed unharmed and unconcerned and also rather unwilling to get out. Obviously he had made his way inside through the cool air vent which made it pretty remarkable that he still seemed to be OK. A couple of tentative prods with my finger saw him move along, onto the outside of the helmet from where he proceeded to fly away.
Goodness knows what would have happened if he had decided to bite me while he was inside; I don’t really want to think about that. I put the helmet and gloves back on and set out again aware that I had probably had a close call.
