It’s Christmas Eve and most Aussies will be looking forward to opening presents and all the hoopla that is involved in our upside-down Christmas. Not so for me, however. You see, I married a girl who was born and raised in Finland and the Finns (and many other Scandinavians) celebrate Christmas ON Christmas Eve. Christmas dinner is eaten, presents are exchanged and, in most families, these formalities are concluded by a visit to church for carols and a Christmas service. As an integral part of retaining their Finnish identity, my wife’s family continued this tradition when they migrated to Australia in 1959 and, when I came into the family, I began to take part in the tradition as well.
SO, to all of my readers, subscribers, regular contributors and friends, may I take the opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope that the festive season is filled with joy and happiness and that 2017 brings you peace, prosperity and satisfaction.
