…is better than a good day at work. A GOOD day’s riding, on the other hand, is better than just about anything. π
It’s been more than a month since we did our traditional day ride and this week was certainly not suitable for it. Stinking hot for the first few days and then pouring rain for the last few. So, when the forecast looked favourable today, we decided to go. Actually, it wasn’t THAT good with a high of 32 degrees predicted but we figured that, if we set off early, we would miss the worst of the heat. So, by 0800 we were heading north. Now, given that we are both retired and could go any damn day we wanted, going on the weekend when the police are at their most active does seem to be a bit foolhardy but we pretty much stick to the speed limit so it doesn’t really matter which day we go. There were about 6 HWP cars doing an RBT job on the Picton Road and that’s all we saw.
Amazingly, the roads were nearly deserted, with hardly any cars and no bikes at all. What the heck?? Morning tea at the GGC, then on for a quick lap of the Ten Mile. We headed back down and stopped at the new cafe at Colo, the Colo Riverside Cafe. A very nice new setup, good food and milk shakes and the owners will soon be opening up a free camping area on the lawns at the back, right next to the Colo River. Will make that a regular stopping place, too.
It was also the first opportunity I had to try out my new helmet and I’m tickled. I’ll give more details in a separate post but it is a keeper, that’s for sure.
At GGC we met and had a great chat to Eric and Kim who are caravanning around Australia, free camping most of the time. Such a great thing to talk to like-minded people. They have down-sized from a 4 bedroom home on 5 acres with a 3 bay garage, to a 3 bedroom home on a quarter of an acre with one garage, to a 40′ bus converted into a motorhome to a 17′ caravan being towed by a 4WD ute. It’s not how much you NEED, but how much you DON’T need that matters.
Another brilliant day on the road. 600 kms and not a bad one amongst them. I wonder where to go next?
