I never cease to be amazed by social media. I can’t even begin to count the number of people from the “old days” who I have as friends on Facebook. Many of them are people who I haven’t seen for thirty or forty years.
This afternoon I spent a very pleasant couple of hours in Kiama, having coffee and bench racing with an old CRRC member from back in the day, Mark Carruthers. Despite the fact that we never actually met during the golden days of the club, we have discovered on FB that we have a myriad of mutual friends both from the club and from the wider Canberra motorcycling fraternity.
Mark was just a teenager when the road closures were on but the vividly remembers the first two meetings at Macarthur Park and was very interested to hear some of the “inside” stories of how the race meetings came to be. He was a keen dirt bike rider and mini bike racer and had some great yarns to tell about the “gun” riders of the day, Phil Sargeant, Wayne Gardner, Stuart Bennett and others.
It was great to hear what some of the old CRRC gang has been up to and he has some good wishes from me to convey to some old mates.
Motorcycle buddies are the best; I think I might have said that before.
