Yesterday afternoon we did the customary visit to the Big Banana and then headed south out of town to the Sawtell Beach Holiday Park. A BIG camping ground covered in hundreds of trees. Beautifully maintained, we opted for a powered site so that we could recharge phones and use the laptop (it was only $5 dearer than an unpowered site!) Dinner at the bistro at the RSL (cheap and cheerful) and an early night after another hot day on the road.
During the night it rained (I didn’t hear as I use earplugs) and the morning was cool and delightful. On the way out of the amenities block after a refreshing shower, I spotted a familiar face. Needless to say, Chris and I spent quite a while chatting about bikes and racing much to our respective wives’ disgust! He mentioned that he was heading north of town for a few nights to a little caravan park right on the beach. I was immediately interested as we had been told about it but had forgotten its name.
Oh, backtrack to Port Macquarie for a moment or two. Through the magical powers of Facebook, I discovered that two historic racing friends from Team GB were in town at the same time as we were so, surprise, surprise, we arranged to meet for coffee, swap tales from the road and compare notes about the current state of historic racing.
It was Mandy and Richard who filled us in on caravan parks, etc since they were heading south from up north on their way back to Sydney for the Sheene and it was them that told us about Sapphire Beach.
Breakfast was brunch this morning. After an ice coffee at YKnot at Coffs Harbour (I mean AT the harbour) we wandered in to town and ate at one of the town eateries, very nice too. We then headed a little further north and are now here at Sapphire Beach, camped next to Chris and his multi-coloured bus. Somehow some more bench racing looks like being on the cards. 🙂
Not as many bikes on the road as I would have expected but it has been very hot so maybe that has discouraged them.
Anyway, that’s it for today. May stay here for a few days. This park is small and quiet and it’s about 50m to the surf!! Hey, someone has to do it.
