Tonight when we were going across for coffee, I spotted this lovely VW van. Obviously converted into a campervan, it appeared to have lots of individual features so I stopped and looked. The door was open and the owner was there so I stopped to chat (as you do). It looked to be in really good condition, not over-restored but much too good to be original.
Conversation with the owner, whose name was George, revealed some interesting details. He had restored the van by himself about 8 years ago. It is actually far from standard. Fitted out inside, it looked cosy and comfortable. But it was the mechanical side that I found most interesting. George had replaced the asthmatic original engine with a last-of-the-model 2.0l engine, fully reconditioned. He has replaced the fuel injection with twin carburettors and attached it to an uprated 5 speed gearbox.
Suspension has been completely overhauled, with anti-roll bars front and rear and uprated shocks. Porsche wheels have been fitted to allow for the fitting of Brembo brakes on the front wheels. Replacement of the rear drums with matching Brembos for the rear wheels is the next part of the project.
Bumper bars have been removed, strengthened and repainted; the interior features a sports steering wheel and full instrumentation. Comfortable seats help as does a gear lever that actually allows you to change gear instead of searching “somewhere” for the next cog.
The roof has been converted to a “pop-top” and the van will sleep 4. George takes it on the road regularly, but, unfortunately, I failed to take a photo of the dancing hula girl that is attached to the top of the dashboard.
George and his brother have three other VW’s in process of restoration, plus a fully restored 1966 “bug” complete with roof racks and surf boards.
California Dreaming? I think so!

Nice, reminds me of the guy from Sandy Feet Surf Shop in Port Macquarie who has a highly desirable Kombi. It has a v6 in it, yeah yeah. Check out the link: http://forums.kombiclub.com/threads/new-sandy-feet-mobile.31888/

A V6 engine? I saw a VW ute the other day with a Subaru WRX engine and transmission in it. 4WD too.
