While I was preparing the article on Paul Kirkman’s special BMW racer, a coincidence occurred that was too interesting to ignore. Unfortunately, it has taken me this long to get it down here so the news will not seem much like news to those who follow the industry and motorcycling closely. Long-term lifers will already know that I am a big fan of the American designer, Roland Sands. Well, recently he and the BMW design studio, released this bike, called the Concept 90 a cooperative effort between the two to do a 21st century rendering of the iconic R90S BMW. The photos shown here have been downloaded from the internet, of course, but many more are freely available if you’d like to follow up on the story.
Using a modern BMW as the donor bike, but harking back to the simpler, spartan, air cooled bikes of the 70’s Sands, and BMW, have produced a light, delicate, 115bhp cruiser/sports bike that has all of the attributes of the original combined with modern styling and technical excellence. I don’t know if there are any plans to produce this bike for sale, but, judging from the response on the internet so far, they definitely should be doing so.
I mean, what’s not to like?
A quick For Sale, if I may. A good friend has a lovely yellow 1999 VFR800 for sale. Low mileage, lots of extras. $5000. Let me know if you are interested. I am, but I don’t have 5000 clams at the moment.
No racing this weekend, but MotoGp resumes next weekend at the Sachsenring in Germany. JLo will have had some time for his collarbone to settle down and will be (almost) back to his best. In the mean time the Silly Season is in full swing. The latest and silliest of them all is that Suzuki are delaying their re-entry into MotoGp till the start of 2015 so that they can hire Valentino Rossi who comes off contract at Yamaha at the end of 2014. I did check my calendar to make sure that it’s not the 1st of April, but it’s not. 🙂
Catch you next time.
