Funny how things go is cycles, isn’t it? After that wonderful photo of Steve McQueen and Mike Hailwood a couple of days ago, I was reminded this morning that, if he had still been with us, McQueen would have been 80 years old today.
McQueen, who famously said, “Racing is life – everything else is just waiting around.” cooperated with Honda to produce the following advertisement. It was made in and around thew Baja Peninsula in southern California and was produced especially for Japanese TV, as seen by the script at the end. McQueen was reputedly paid one million dollars to do the ad, a mountain of cash in 1973.
Following in the footprints, if not the blueprints of Bruce Brown’s iconic “On Any Sunday”, the ad distills in just a few minutes what is that indefinable “something” that makes us want to ride. Enjoy.
