….sort of.
Feeling a bit “ragged” this morning after calling a 22 race speedway event at Nowra Speedway last night. Wollongong club finally managed to put together the much-anticipated sprintcar show and it was a belter. 20+ 800 horsepower winged monsters around the little 400m track was absolutely awesome.
My first big hit-out since the accident; I probably should have chosen something a little less ambitious, but the club specifically invited me and even though I haven’t called any other meetings this season, they were anxious that I didn’t miss out on the biggest show of the season.
A 70km each-way car journey was only one of the challenges that arose; far further than I’d been in the car since getting out of hospital, but I managed reasonably well with the knee only really singing out for relief in the last third of the trip each way. Satisfying.
Obviously I am not yet able to climb the very steep stairs into the tower so they organised a table for me at the base of it and I called the races from there. Visibility was not as good as from upstairs but we got the job done. I sat in the wheelchair and was reasonably comfortable.
The 30 lap Feature race for sprintcars was a cracker; so glad I got to see that. The crowd was HUGE and everything points to the event becoming a regular feature on the calendar. I sure hope so, it was a great night.
