Joan Lascorz clips the back wheel of Eugene Laverty’s bike after Laverty moves over on him in T2 at Silverstone last night. He falls and is clobbered by Roberto Tamburini and the accident brings out the red flag. Amazingly, the initial report suggested that both riders had survived with only minor injuries. This morning’s report is not quite so glowing. Here’s the official word. “After being admitted to hospital Joan was diagnosed with four broken ribs, an injury to his shoulder, a finger injury and some blood inside his lung. The other rider, Roberto Tamburini had a broken left collarbone. Joan is being kept in hospital in England for around a week and although it is too early to predict how fast his recovery will be, it is expected to take some weeks.”
As one who is still recuperating from 6 broken ribs 5 months ago, I wish Joan well. In point of fact, they were pretty lucky that that is all the injuries incurred.
Laverty showed great racecraft to win the re-started WSS race from Sofoglu and a distant Gino Rea. Sofoglu still sitting pretty with a 17 point lead with just 3 races to go, but it’s going to be tight. In WSBK, Crutchlow finally justified his pole positions (this was his 5th of the season) to win both races. The Poms are, of course, over the moon with the showing from the British riders (even though both Laverty and Rae are actually Irish), but one swallow does not a summer make. Despite finishing 5th and 6th in the two races last night, Max Biaggi only bled 7 points from his lead in the championship. Expect Max to bounce back after the 3 week mid-season break and re-assert his dominance.
