By now you are probably tired of me banging on about Ralph Hudson. Well, don’t expect me to change anytime soon. The idea of a 60+ year old guy being the 2nd fastest motorcycle racer on the planet is reason enough to laud his achievements let alone the fact that he is such a damn nice guy. Here’s a 15 minute documentary produced by Honda and focusing on Ralphie’s main rival at the Bolivia shootout, Texan, Al Lamb. The film is clearly about Al and his efforts and so it should be, after all, they paid the money to have it made.
However, Ralphie features prominently in the video for obvious reasons. I NEVER watch videos that people say I MUST watch, so I’m not going to insult you by saying that you must watch this one, but, should you choose to do so (and I hope you do) I can guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. Indeed, you may even find yourself watching it more than once! The cinematography is excellent and it is a wonderful little piece of documentary making. I think you will be impressed as I am.
Just a couple of things that didn’t make it into the doco and I mention them just to balance the ledger so to speak. The narrator does not mention that Al’s stunning improvement on Day 2 was because Ralphie lent him parts to help him solve his turbo problems.
Nor does it mention that Al would have been a crew member down for the attempt after one of his mechanics fell ill if not for the intervention of a (literally) passing Australian adventure bike rider who paused on his journey to pitch in and make up the slack (you see him several times in the BMW jacket). It’s a pity that the local motorcycle media has not chased this guy up and gotten his story, first hand, it would be a scoop to end all scoops.
Anyway, without further ado, grab some popcorn, dim the lights and enjoy “Chasing 300” Yes it is copyright and no, I haven’t asked the owner’s permission to file it, but I am sure I’m on the safe side! 🙂
